Satisfied Because Of His Faithfulness
Worship Devotional for 3/27/22
We've been singing lately about how God is the only One who can truly satisfy our souls with His goodness and love. In Christ alone do we find true joy and fulfillment and ultimate satisfaction. How can it be that such a blessing could be ours to enjoy when we are so undeserving and unworthy, with hearts that are so prone to wander and to chase after lies that fail to fulfill their empty promises of satisfaction and joy? How can God continually love us so much that He would offer us such a great and eternal gift? We may begin to understand the answer to these questions when we understand that it isn't ultimately about us, but rather His glory. We can be faithless at times, but He remains faithful, just as Paul wrote in 2 Timothy 2:11-13:
"This saying is trustworthy: For if we have died with Him, we will also live with Him; if we endure, we will also reign with Him; if we deny Him, He will also deny us; if we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself."
He is faithful to call us back into His glorious presence when our hearts go astray. He is faithful to fulfill all His promises, for His word is true. He is faithful to be who He is without wavering or changing, for He is perfect in holiness, righteousness, justice, truth, and love. He is faithful to keep us in His love, to fight for us when we are too weak to stand on our own, to protect us from the lies of the evil one, and to continually lead and guide us as we grow in faith by His grace. It is because of His faithfulness that we are satisfied in Him.
Lamentations 3:21-24 says:
"Yet I call this to mind, and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord's faithful love we do not perish, for His mercies never end. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness! I say: The Lord is my portion, therefore I will put my hope in Him."
Nothing else can satisfy because there is no other who is faithful like our God. The promises of worldly pleasure, wealth, success, fame, security, etc. may appear to be true for a time, but they will eventually fail. Deception and sin may feel good for a short while, but they only lead to destruction and death. Even our own efforts and goals and strivings which come from our own strength and will may seem to succeed at first, but they will also ultimately fall short of providing the satisfaction we hope to attain from them. In order for the deep longings of our souls to be satisfied, we need One who is steadfast, unwavering, consistent, and unchanging, able to keep His promises. For our hearts to be eternally satisfied, we need One who is eternally faithful. Nothing in this world can be that for us. Everything is subject to death and destruction. Everyone is fallen and broken by sin's power and deception. This world as we know it will eventually come to an end, and all the things we tried to make out of it will soon fade away. For the one who hopes to find satisfaction in himself or in any other created thing, there is only despair.
But for those of us who have come to know Jesus Christ, we have a reason — the only reason — to truly rejoice! He defeated death and made a way for us to have eternal life! Through Him we have been reconciled to our perfect Father in heaven, we have died to the old ways of the flesh and have been made new in the image of Christ, and we now have the Holy Spirit to guide us in what is true and right and eternal. The joy of Christ is ours as well, and the light of this joy is what we must shine to those around us who are in darkness. We belong to an eternal kingdom, not of this world, where we will dwell forever with our faithful King in His glorious presence to bless His name forever and ever. Let us rejoice in His faithfulness and be satisfied by His faithful love, so that He may be glorified in and through us as we serve Him with our lives on this earth!
