Worship Devotional for 10/10/21

Simple yet profound, foundational, what we need to remember and to believe at all times and in every situation — the truth that God is good. We sang about the victory we have in Christ our Lord and how the battles we face belong to the Lord, who fights for us. We sang about how God has rescued us from the darkness and from the condemnation we deserve because of our sins. We sang about the freedom and life that He gives us because of His great and everlasting love that He has for us, and how He has made us new and adopted us into His kingdom to be His children and no longer be enslaved to sin, death, darkness, deception, or any other force of evil. All of this is rooted in the goodness of God. We've stated that our mission is to know God and to make Him known. This starts with knowing that He is only ever good.

When things are going well and our fleshly and worldly needs are met, so that we experience comfort and success and peace by the world's standards, we must remember that God is good. He is the One from whom all good things flow. He gives and He takes away according to His sovereign plan. We cannot rightfully take credit for any of the good things we enjoy, because we are the created and God is the Creator, and we don't deserve any of it. Yet still He gives good things to us by His grace and mercy and love, because He is good, and He defines what good really is.

When things are falling apart around us and we must endure hard times, pain and suffering, trials, tribulations, fiery ordeals, struggles and burdens of this life, etc., we must remember that God is good. When things don't make sense and we wonder why we have to hurt the way we do, God is still good. When we've tried hard over and over to do the right things and to stay on track, and yet we still fail and fall short in the same ways over and over again, what we really need is to believe and keep believing the same timeless truth: God is good. These struggles are only temporary. God has taken care of the eternal issues that no one can possibly deal with by their own ability, such as death and final judgment. What He has done for us through the death and resurrection of His Son Jesus remains true, no matter how difficult or painful the circumstances which you are faced with right now. Hold fast to what is true! God is always good!

This week we repeat a simple but deep and foundational theme when it comes to knowing God — His goodness. God is good all the time, and all the time God is good. In the midst of literally whatever circumstances each of us finds ourselves in, we can still join together this week with one heart and one voice and sing the truth. With each time we say that God is good, may our hearts reflect even deeper and draw ever closer to the One who loves us so much more than we can fathom.
