~ Trinity Sunday ~

O, what grace we have been given by the God of all creation! We could never deserve based on our own merit to have forgiveness, life, love, and goodness, let alone for all eternity! This week we are singing about the mystery of the Trinity — One God in three Persons. As we reflect on the mystery of who He is and how He works as Three yet One, we also stand in wonder at the grace He has for His people. His sovereignty, justice, and tender mercy all come together in a great display of unfathomable grace toward us who believe. God's holiness and righteousness and justice mysteriously work in unity with His faithful love and kindness and mercy, just as the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are unified as one God. How amazing that He should desire to also be one with us, His people!

Here are the songs:

  1) My One Comfort by Dustin Kensrue

Inspired by the first entry in the Heidelberg Catechism — a series of questions and answers for teaching Christian doctrine that was written in Heidelberg, Germany in 1563 — this song answers the question: what is our only comfort in life and in death? As the Catechism states, our only comfort is that we are not our own, but we belong to God forever — by the will of the Father, the blood of the Son, and the power of Spirit.

  2) Grace Alone by Dustin Kensrue

This song beautifully relates the doctrine of the Trinity with the wonders of grace. There's a lot of theological depth here, and yet the message is quite simple: we are saved by grace alone through faith in Jesus Christ (see Ephesians 2:8).

  3) The Lord Is My Salvation by Keith & Kristyn Getty

   (Shane & Shane version here)

We may not be able to really grasp or comprehend such deep mysteries like the Holy Trinity of God, but those who encounter Him and come to know Him by His word don't have to understand everything. We know by experience and through faith that what the Scripture says is true: He alone is our salvation. In Him we are saved from the utter depravity of our sins, the condemnation and shame of our spiritually dead state, and the hopelessness and fear of the world apart from God. Let us praise Him with all of our hearts for the great gifts and blessings we have in Him by His grace!

  4) We Believe by Matthew Hooper and Travis Ryan

Have you noticed that we live in a broken world? Fear, doubt, lust, and deception are all rampant. We are all broken and sinful from the fall way back at the beginnings of history. There are many crazy things going on today in the world as its end which we've heard about in God's word draws near. How can we stand against such drastic and terrifying opposition and injustice? Actually it's quite simple: by faith. We sing and speak and stand with confidence because we believe in the name of Jesus, and in the word of our God.

1 John 5:1-5:

"Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Messiah has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father also loves the one born of Him. This is how we know that we love God's children when we love God and obey His commands. For this is what love for God is: to keep His commands. Now His commands are not a burden, because whatever has been born of God conquers the world. This is the victory that has conquered the world: our faith. And who is the one who conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?"

Scriptures:

  • Psalm 118 (esp. v. 14)

  • Matthew 16:13-19

  • John 14-16

  • Romans 5-6

  • 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

  • 2 Corinthians 1:3-7

  • Galatians

  • Ephesians 1-2

  • 1 John

What a great and awesome God we serve! And we only are able to know Him by His grace and mercy toward us. It's what separates Christianity from all other religions. It's how we know that what we believe — the faith we profess — is indeed true and not just like some other religion. We can know and be sure that we believe in the truth only by the grace of God. May His grace and peace be multiplied to us all in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit!
