Weekly Worship Devotional

This week we are singing about the hope we have in a God who is sovereign, who truly satisfies, and who is worthy of all praise and glory. We may not fully understand all He does or allows in His sovereignty, but we can always trust, rest in, and know that He is good, His love endures forever, He is faithful and true, and He is for us.

Here are the songs for this week:

  1) The Heart Of Worship by Matt Redman

As we go forward into 2020, I think it is important that we be reminded of the real reason we sing and make music to the Lord during our Sunday fellowship. It's all about Him—His glory, His praise, His honor, His worth. It's not about me. It's not about you. It's all about Him. Now in worshipping Him, we are blessed and encouraged and built up and edified, so in that sense it is also about us. However, it's truly about Him because we are only saved and blessed by His grace, according to what He has done, and not by anything we could do or be by ourselves. We need to be reminded of this as we live in a culture/world that is bent toward exalting self rather than God. God alone is worthy of praise.

  2) Sovereign Over Us by Aaron Keyes

The God who alone is worthy to be praised is sovereign. This can be a difficult concept to understand, and the details of this astounding truth have been debated for pretty much all of history, but the Bible is clear in teaching that God is sovereign over all things. As believers in Him, this is a great comfort. It means we can always trust and depend on God. He will never fail to fulfill His purposes for us, even in the face of our own weaknesses and failures. This song emphasizes God's love and faithfulness, no matter what trials or storms may come.

  3) Living Hope by Phil Wickham

We serve the only true and living God. Because He alone is God, the hope we have in Him is the only true hope. We hope in His power to raise the dead and give eternal life to those who believe in Him. This hope is alive and eternal, and we praise God for it with this song.

  4) Come Thou Fount (Above All Else) by Shane & Shane

A modern rendition of the 1700s hymn, "Come Thou Fount," this song is about worshipping the One who satisfies with all our hearts. Our hearts are prone to wander away from Him, but we trust in His grace and sovereign power to bring us back into His presence and make our hearts fully His.

Here are some passages of Scripture to go with the set:

  • Genesis 50:19-20

  • Psalm 103, 115, 135, 138 (esp. v.8), 139, 145, 146

  • Proverbs 16:4, 16:9, & 16:33

  • Isaiah 55:6-11

  • Daniel 4:34-35

  • Romans 5:1-5, 8-9 (esp. 8:28-39 & 9:14-26), 15:4, & 15:13

  • Ephesians 1:1-2:10

  • 1 Timothy 6:13-16

  • 1 Peter 1:3-9

Take some time to consider the unfathomable greatness and power of the God we serve, who loved us and made a way for us to be saved from His wrath and given eternal life. As we read His word this week and sing and make music for His glory, let us rejoice in the hope we have in Him. See you Sunday!
